CAN WE PRAY FOR REVIVAL?

Brian H. Edwards

The author's first book on revival, Revival! - a people saturated with God, looked at the subject historically, though within a biblical framework. He has since been challenged with the question, 'Are you sure that revival is an experience to be sought after and expected with the authority of Scripture behind it?'

That is a fair question, because there are many religious experiences among Christians that bear little resemblance to anything taught in the Bible. Yet, across the world today Christians are pleading with God for an outpouring of his Holy Spirit in revival - but what is their authority for praying as they do? Is revival a certainty because God has committed himself to sending it to us? And if so, when? Or is it a probability providing we fulfil the right conditions? Or is it simply a possibility in the light of his character and the way that he has dealt with his people in the past? These are some of the issues discussed in Can we pray for revival?

Brian Edwards looks at the subject both biblically and historically, and steers us carefully through the minefields of misunderstanding. He presents a theological framework to support praying for revival. The importance of our subject is that, as the author concedes, God is not obliged to keep promises he has never made.
